We work with our partners to use that knowledge to address the challenges they face. And we provide graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in this work. “By comparing changes in online search activity across different geographies, we were able to estimate how COVID-induced demand for online resources varied by a range of geographic and socioeconomic factors, including income, internet access, and rurality,” explain Bacher-Hicks and Goodman. The results they found were notable. Explore centers, labs & institutes Dr. Kathleen Corriveau, BU Wheelock associate professor of applied human development, and Dr. Rebekah Richert, University of California Riverside associate professor of psychology, have received the second-largest grant ever issued by the John Templeton Foundation. The $10 million grant, to be disbursed by Templeton over five years, will fully implement a network they have named the Developing Belief Network. Upward Bound: “Like a GPS for students” This year, 103 high schoolers are in the Upward Bound program, attended by about three dozen staff and volunteers, including teachers for their math, science, literature, writing, and foreign language classes. About half of the tutors are BU students. Additionally, four Wheelock College of Education & Human Development science fellows are doing their prepracticum in Zoom classrooms. “One goal of the summer program is to give students that residential experience, so when they go off to college, it’s not a foreign experience to them,” Reggie Jean says. “They’ve not only heard about ways to navigate it, they’ve experienced it. They’ve had to get up on their own and walk to classes.” Altogether, it can mean big growth for students.
